    Bike Parts

There are many small, subtle bike parts that go into the overall composition of a bike. However, only bike mechanics need to know every variant on every part. The essential parts are: the saddle and seat post, the front area, the brakes, the pedals, the chain, the crank and, of course, the wheels.

The front area refers to the handlebars, the front brakes, and the handlebar grips. There are different kinds of bike wheels available, depending on what kind of riding you want to do. Generally, off-road bikes have wider tires whereas road bikes have skinny ones.

Important things to keep in mind as you customize your bicycle include making sure that you have a comfortable seat, that the pedals move effectively, and that you keep your tires inflated. Needless to say, you will also want to be sure you have effective brakes on your bike.

If you do not know a lot about your bike for whatever reason—whether it is your first bike, or you just don’t ride it that often, or whatever the case might be—it is always a good idea to seek the advice of others when you are considering investing in new bike parts. That said, don’t feel intimidated. Once you get some riding experience, you will start to feel more comfortable talking about different bike parts.

Once again, there are far more bike parts out there than the basic components listed above. These range from the cable guide to the rotor to the spindle. If you are passionate about your bike or bikes in general, you might want to learn about all of these. But if you are just starting out, knowing some information about the basic parts is probably all that is needed.

Some bike parts are not on every bike, and might not even be necessary for everyone. For example, it is not essential that your bike have a kickstand. However, they are usually pretty easy and inexpensive to install, and make it much easier to stand up your bike. Similarly, a bike will ride without handlebar grips, but having them might make your riding experience that much easier.

Beyond the parts that make up the direct body of your bike, there are also bike parts out there that enhance the function or style of your bike, or make it easier to store and protect. An example of this would be the bike basket, which can help you carry more things with you as you ride around, and alter the appearance of your bike as well.

Finally, bike racks and other storage devices can be useful for giving your bike a reliable, sturdy place at home. Likewise, you will want to have an advanced bike lock with you if you are planning to go anywhere where you will have to leave your bike unattended. Sometimes these parts are better understood not as parts but as accessories, but whatever terminology you use, they are important items to consider.
